How to Weigh a Pig

If you are like us, then you don’t have a large animal scale lying around. So what happens when you need to weigh a pig without a scale? It is actually pretty simple! All you need is a fabric measuring tape… and maybe some food for distraction.

To figure out the weight, you will need to take two measurements: the heart girth and the length.

In order to find the heart girth, you can take the measuring tape and place it just behind the pigs front legs. You will then measure the circumference of the pig in inches. This measurement is the heart girth.

Next, you will want to measure the length of the pig from the base of its ears, to the base of its tail.

Now for the equation:

So, for example: Say you have a heart girth of 36 inches and a length of 40 inches.

36 x 36 = 1296

1296 x 40 = 51840

51840 / 400 = 129.6 lbs.

It is really that easy! We highly recommend distracting the pig while you taking these measurements. We have found that it is easiest to measure them while they are eating.
